Off-Campus: Millennial Coded
Cardigans, fake dating, and why this hockey show felt like a time machine to my early twenties
Note: Spoilers ahead for the Prime Video TV show, Off-Campus.
By now, you’ve probably watched Off-Campus like the other 30+ million people out there.
I actually watched it during its very first week of release, which is super unusual for me. I don’t jump on hype bandwagons for books or TV shows because I’ve been burned way too many times. Too much hype usually equals never good enough.
But the first trailer piqued my curiosity. Despite my reticence with hockey romances, watching it immediately transported me straight back to my late teens and early 20s. It gave me Bring It On and 10 Things I Hate About You vibes, which were peak when I was growing up.
I regret nothing about watching it once, twice, three times, and honestly, probably more in the future. It was just such a refreshing, fun ride.

Let’s start with Hannah.
She is the poster child for a 2000’s college student. She’s dressed with cardigans over scoop neck tank tops, flared jeans, and wedges. She’s a classic overachiever, burying her trauma underneath pleasant smiles, perfectionism, and good grades. She is a little dorky by the ‘cool kid’ standards, convinced the hot musician she crushes on will never notice her.
And her happy go-lucky nature paired with a deep love of music sealed the deal for me. I mean, what millennial didn’t bury themselves in custom playlists to cope with their sh*tty days? I dare you to challenge me on that. It is still my go-to for dealing with stressful situations or decompressing.
Then, enter Garrett.
Garrett is the classic jock who pretends to be dumb, because back then, it wasn’t cool to be smart. He sleeps around (slightly less than his buddies) because it is a stress reliever, but he is crystal clear about his ‘no relationships’ rule. He’s laser-focused on hockey, his friends, and that’s pretty much it. He drinks moderately, works out obsessively, and carries heavy trauma that still haunts him. And internalizing that childhood trauma was the name of the game in the 2000’s, not talking out your feelings in therapy over Zoom like everyone does now in 2026.
Then, surprisingly (or not), one girl being completely silly and dancing around calms his demons enough to help him crush the competition.
The Nostalgia Magic & Live Threads Reactions
I won’t even get into Allie and Dean because they’re so 2000/2010’s coded! They’re low key my favorite by the way — the J.Lo dance moment, plus the holiday road trip with Beau really made them the sweetest secret couple ever!.
As I was watching the show, I couldn’t stop posting my unfiltered thoughts on Threads. Looking back at my notes, every single episode blew me away, though episodes 1 & 6 remain my all-time favorites!
A few of the live reactions from solo watch party:
✨Off-campus ep1: Still episode 1? Didn’t realized it’d be this long. The music though 🔥 playlist incoming.
✨Off-campus ep1: Ok last one,but I’m gushing that he thought of her and her silly dancing and won!!!!!!!!
✨found her drink drink, yummyyyyyyy!!! karaoke is so good 🔥
✨Off-campus ep6: Might be better than ep1. Allie & Dean are chef’s kiss.
✨Off-campus ep7: Fudging Delaney 🤢🤢🤢 Not a breakup because of him 🥺🥺🥺
✨Off-campus ep7: Hannah has the best parents!!! What the heck is euchre? Looking it up later.
✨Off-campus ep8: Yay! They’re back together! Go love!! And Hunter Davenport?!?!? OMG oh lordy. Tell me s2 is Dean & Allie!!!! Can’t believe it’s over! 😭😭Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. As a bookseller partner with Libro.fm and as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. At no extra cost to you. It has been a long time since I’ve been this totally obsessed with a series. I even made my husband watch it and he loved it!! Though he did make me fast forward through episodes 7 and 8 because he couldn’t handle the suspense of them breaking up.
